Emergency Management Policy Branch
The Emergency Management Policy Branch provides policy advice to the Commonwealth Attorney‑General on emergency management issues. As part of this role, the Branch is advancing policy on resilience to guide national strategy and programs for disaster management. Secretariat, policy and coordination support is also provided to the Ministerial Council for Police and Emergency Management – Emergency Management (MCPEM-EM), and its sub‑committee, the Australian Emergency Management Committee (AEMC).
The Branch comprises three sections:
- Emergency Management Policy Section provides policy advice to the Commonwealth Attorney‑General and develops high level emergency management policy initiatives for consideration by MCPEM‑EM. The Section also works closely with the AEMC and its jurisdictional emergency management representatives.
- Emergency Management Liaison Section coordinates policy and secretariat support for the MCPEM‑EM, the AEMC, high level taskforce meetings and other groups.
- Emergency Warnings System Taskforce is responsible for coordinating the Commonwealth implementation of the Council of Australian Governments’ agreement on building a national telephony-based system for delivering emergency warnings to the Australian community.
