Our areas of responsibility
Claims and Negotiation Team
The role of the Claims and Negotiation (CAN) team is to:
- provide policy advice to the Attorney-General in relation to native title mediation and litigation broadly
- manage Australian Government involvement in native title mediation and litigation. (The CAN team provides instructions to the Australian Government Solicitor on behalf of the Attorney-General in cases to which the Australian Government is a party).
Legislation, Scrutiny and International Team
The role of the Legislation, Scrutiny and International Team is to:
- develop and implement legislative policy proposals about native title, including proposals which may affect native title and its related legislation
- respond to and comment on issues in the international arena that relate to native title (for example, reports by various Committees in the United Nations system touching on native title)
- monitor, and where appropriate comment on and respond to, domestic scrutiny of native title, such as the work of Parliamentary Committees and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, and
- develop native title compensation litigation policy and strategy, and assist in the development of more general legal policy about mediation and litigation.
