Indigenous Law and Justice programs

The Australian Government Attorney-General's Department is responsible for the delivery of law and justice programs that benefit Indigenous Australians, and for policy advice on Indigenous law and justice issues.

The Department also assists in the administration of the Northern Territory Agreement made between the Prime Minister and the then Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. The purpose of this agreement is to:

  • reduce the number of juveniles entering the criminal justice system, and
  • alleviate the language barriers faced by Aboriginal persons.
