Pacific Island Regional Workshop on Transnational Crime - 4 June 2007

The Attorney-General’s Department and the Australian Federal Police will host a workshop this week which will focus on developing the intelligence and investigative capacity of law enforcement agencies in the Pacific region.

The Pacific Regional Workshop will bring together agencies from 14 Pacific island nations to take part in a scenario aimed at combating money laundering in the region.

Representatives from the Pacific Island Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) and Transnational Crime Units (TCUs) will work together to exchange information and cooperate on a hypothetical money laundering investigation. Participants will also be provided with training in:

Guest presenters at the workshop include Mr Bambang Setiono from the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and Mr Andrew Milford, from the Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre (PFTAC).

The workshop is an example of Australia’s whole-of-government approach to transnational crime in the Pacific region. A number of Australian Government agencies are taking part, including AUSTRAC, the Australian Customs Service, Australian Federal Police and the Attorney-General’s Department.
